'Drunk' crane driver mows down biker in Bangalore

A real estate agent was killed on the spot and two others were severely injured after a crane rammed into several vehicles near the Jnana Bharathi campus here on Monday evening.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 4:45 pm after the vehicle suffered a brake failure at Malagala, off the Jnana Bharathi campus.

The crane, belonging to Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara company, rammed into five two-wheelers, a tempo and an autorickshaw.

Chengal Raj Setty (37), a real estate agent and a resident of Moodalpalya, was killed on the spot after the crane hit his motorcycle while he was returning home. Setty is survived by his wife.

A native of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Setty settled in Bangalore about 20 years ago with his parents and two younger brothers, the police said.

Two others, Naveen Kumar P S (38) and Nagaraj (25), sustained severe injuries and have been admitted to a private hospital. Kumar, who fractured his right leg, told Deccan Herald that he was on the way to drop his 12-year-old son Charukesh for tuition. The boy escaped with minor injuries. The two-wheeler was crushed under the crane.

The crane driver, whom the locals alleged was drunk, fled the spot. There was tension in the area following the accident as angry residents took to the street and damaged the crane.

The police have seized the crane and the damaged vehicles. The Kamakshipalya traffic police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and are on the lookout for the driver and owner of the crane.
