Pawar crashes out to Tien in third round

Mumbai shuttler Anand Pawar crashed out of the Swiss Grand Prix Gold tournament after losing his third-round rubber against Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chen Chou at St. Jakobshalle here on Thursday.

Chou won the encounter 14-21, 21-12, 21-12 in 51 minutes to progress into the next round. Pawar had beaten Germany’s Tobias Wadenka 21-11, 21-4 in a late match on Wednesday to progress to the third round.

Third-seeded Parupalli Kashyap took just 33 minutes to dispose off Lukas Schmidt of Germany 21-15, 21-14 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals where he will face Malaysian shuttler Beryno Jiann Tze Wong.

Saina wins easy

London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal opened her campaign in the women’s singles event with a straight game win over qualifier Japan’s Chisato Hoshi.

The sixth seeded Indian beat her Japanese opponent 21-12, 21-12 in 34 minutes to progress to the second round.

Saina will next face Sashina Vignes Waran of France later on Thursday, while the other Indian in fray in the women’s singles event, seventh seed PV Sindhu, will be up against Canadian Li Michelle in her second round duel.
