Haladi's supporters to back Shobha Karandlaje

Last Updated 24 March 2014, 17:01 IST

BJP candidate for Udupi-Chikmaglur Lok Sabha constituency, Shobha Karandlaje has claimed that the supporters of independent MLA from Kundapur--Haladi Srinivas Shetty, have decided to support her in the parliamentary election.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Sunday, she expressed confidence over Haladi coming back to the BJP fold. BJP workers and leaders of Kundapur and Byndoor Assembly constituencies who are closely associated with Haladi (Haladi had left BJP after being denied a ministerial berth in 2012) had decided to support her.

Minor differences had forced Haladi to quit BJP and contest as an independent candidate. The support of Haladi’s supporters will boost  prospects of the BJP. “The new wave promised by the BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi would certainly result in positive changes,” she said.

Karandlaje said that sitting MP and Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde has failed to meet the expectations of the people. He has failed to raise the problems faced by the people in Parliament. The internal differences in the BJP led to the victory of Hegde in the by poll. The Congress has failed to address the concern over ban on arecanut, she criticised.

The Congress government has also failed to offer compensation for farmers whose areca plantations were affected with yellow leaf disease. The disease has destroyed majority of arecanut plantations in Chikmagalur district.

The Congress had promised to implement recommendations of Gorakh Singh committee report on arecanut. However, the promises have remained only on paper, she said.

Terming the state government as anti SC/ST and anti poor, the former minister alleged that the Congress government is engaged in displacing the encroachers. Majority of the encroachers are hailing from SC/ST communities.

To a query on the candidature of the close associate of former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, V Dhananjay Kumar in JD(S) ticket in Udupi-Chikmagalur, Karandlaje said that Yeddyurappa had tried hard to get Kumar re-inducted into the BJP.

Haladi supporter Kiran Kodgi said that Haladi has decided to remain as an independent in the election, however he hadgiven the freedom for his supporters to decide on their own.

The Zilla Panchayat members from Basrur, Koteshwara, Haladi, Kota, Kundapur Taluk Panchayat vice president and members and Saligarama Town Panchayat president, vice president and members are all supporting the candidature of the BJP, Kiran Kodgi added.
