He was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here and his condition continues to be critical. The attack was carried out at a time when the moderate faction of Hurriyat was gearing up for talks with Centre. It had responded positively to the recent offers of talks by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram.

However, the hardline faction of Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the militants had strongly criticised the moderate Hurriyat for showing willingness for talks with the Centre.

Even some leaders within the moderate Hurriyat, including Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan are against the dialogue with New Delhi.

Police said Quereshi was shot at by militants outside his residence at Soura around 6.05 PM. The incident occurred when he was coming out of a mosque after offering Friday prayers.

Director SKIMS Dr Hamid Zargar said it appeared that he was hit with a sharp edged weapons damaging his brain extensively.
