'Stipend for new lawyers should be extended to three years

Speaking at a meet organised by the Federation of Bar Association’s in Karnataka on Friday, he said that nearly 60 per cent of the lawyers do not find the profession economically viable.

Government’s help

“Advocates need the government’s help and in the 2010 budget we will include increasing the duration of the stipend to three years’ time for newcomers,” he said.
Lawyers, currently get a stipend of Rs 2,000 in the first two years.

A trend in Judiciary

He also appreciated the declaration of assets by Justice Shylendra Kumar and hoped that it would become a trend in the Judiciary.

On the issue of charges against Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, he said that it was up to the collegium to take a call on this matter and it was not right on the part of advocates to rush in and demand a decision or ask him not to sit through judicial proceedings.
