A 28-year-old woman and her paramour have been arrested for killing her husband on the eve of Holi in south west Delhi’s Sagarpur, police said on Thursday.

The accused have been identified as Santoshi Devi and Govind, 30. They were held after 30-year-old Surendra Sharma, a carpenter and resident of Sagarpur, was found stabbed to death on Uttam Nagar-Najafgarh Road on Holi.

“Probe had revealed that Surendra’s wife was involved in an extra-marital affair with their neighbour Govind,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Suman Goyal. Thus the needle of suspicion pointed towards Govind’s involvement and he was nabbed from his house.

Govind was interrogated, but he initially tried to trick the investigating officers. However, when confronted with facts, he could not give any satisfactory reply and broke down. “He confessed his and Santoshi Devi’s involvement in the murder,” Goyal added.

Govind came to the capital in search of work last year and was living in a room adjacent to Surendra’s house. Soon, he started working with Surendra and in this way they became good friends. “He used to frequently visit Surendra’s house and developed intimacy with Santoshi,” Goyal said.

Govind and Santoshi wanted to get married, and finding no alternative, they decided to eliminate Surendra. On March 16, Surendra was taken into confidence by Govind and was persuaded to have liquor on the eve of Holi.

As per plan, Surendra was called near Uttam Nagar-Najafgarh drain. Liquor was served till he became stupor. Finding an opportune moment, Govind stabbed Surendra to death. After confirming Surendra’s death, Govind dumped the body in the drain.

Police have recovered the weapon of offence and a blood stained shirt.
