A farmer was trampled to death by a herd of elephants at Talapa near Amboli village in the taluk on Monday.
Vithal Arjana Velipa was walking home through the forest after taking part in a fair when the incident occurred. The farmer is survived by wife and two sons.
Tahsildar T Hadimani, who visited the spot, said that he would send a report to the government and urge for steps to shift the herd of elephants camping in Amboli.
They have been destroying crops in the area. The Forest department has sanctioned a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to Velipa’s family.
