The Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee staged a protest against the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for not revealing his wife’s details to the Election Commission in the affidavits filed before the Election Commission in earlier elections.

DPMC president Onika Mehrotra also slammed Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav over his comment on rapists.

Scores of women Congress workers gathered at the Delhi Congress headquarters at DDU Marg at about 2 pm on Friday and marched towards ITO shouting slogans against Modi. They carried Modi posters and placards in their hands. The police personnel stopped them from marching beyond ITO Chowk.

They then burnt an effigy of Modi.

“On one hand Modi talks about women empowerment, but on the other hand he has dumped his wife, disrespecting women at large. He never disclosed his wife’s name and never gave her the rights of a lawfully wedded wife for more than 40 years. It is deeply against women,” she said.

The young Congress leader said, “He has misguided people about his marital status and provided false information, which is a crime.”

“It proves that Modi continues to hide facts from the people. Modi must apologise to the nation for hiding such crucial information,” she added.

Asked about SP supremo Mulayam Singh’s reported comment opposing the death sentence to those convicted in Mumbai’s Shakti Mill gang-rape case, she said, “It is highly condemnable. We should have a zero tolerance against such statements. No leader from any political party or even a citizen shall make such comment that goes against the dignity of women.”
