21-yr-old attempts to rape minor twice in one week

A 21-year-old youth allegedly attempted to rape an eight-year-old girl twice in the last one week in central Delhi’s Nabi Karim area. The accused was arrested on Sunday morning.

The victim stays with her family in Nabi Karim and is a class two student at a government school close to her home. Her father works at a private company.

Police said the accused Mohammad Asghar stays at a rented accommodation in the same locality and would often play with the girl. However, on Saturday he found the girl alone near her home.

“He lured the girl to an isolated spot near her house and tried to rape her. But the victim began shouting which forced him to abandon her there and flee,” said a police officer. The victim rushed back home and narrated the incident to her mother.

Her father immediately approached the Nabi Karim police station and lodged a formal complaint.

Even as police were filing a case, the victim took them by surprise by telling them that Asghar had attempted to rape her even on the night of April 7 this year.

“She has told us that the situation was quite similar even that night as he had found her alone. In this case, his attempt was thwarted as some locals happened to pass by that area. He was looking for another opportunity after that failed attempt,” the officer said.

A police team went to his residence to look for him on Saturday night, but he was not found. “We learnt of his location on Sunday morning and arrested him. He has confessed that he was looking for an opportunity to rape her,” added the officer.

A case has been registered and police are trying to ascertain if there were other victims in the locality who might not have revealed the incidents to their parents. The accused is employed with a bag-making company.
