63 pc exercise franchise in 11 UP seats

An estimated 63 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the second phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh on 11 seats spread across Rohilkhand region on Thursday. Barring stray incidents, the polling was by and large peaceful, according to the Election Commission sources here.

Amroha recorded the maximum of 68 per cent turnout followed by 67.38 per cent at Moradabad. Lowest turn out of 58.90 per cent was recorded at Shahjahanpur seat, sources said. In a tragic incident, a youth committed self immolation at a polling centre in Aonla constituency after he was forced out of the booth by the security personnel as he did not have voter's identity card. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. EC sources said that the youth was mentally disturbed. A report has been sought from the officials, the EC sources said.

In another incident, the AAP candidate from Pilibhit Rajiv Agarwal was detained after he tried to allegedly disrupt polling at a booth, sources said.

The seats that went to polls on Thursday included Moradabad, Aonla, Pilibhit, Nagina, Shahjahanpur, Badayun, Bareilly and Rampur. Prominent candidate whose fate was sealed on Thursday included senior BJP leader Maneka Gandhi.
