States to submit compliance report in 6 weeks

SC order prohibits construction of places of worship in public areas

Following Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium’s submission that no state except Uttar Pradesh has submitted the report on the order — pronounced on September 29 — a bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari gave six weeks time to the states to submit the report. “Under no circumstances, any construction of place of worship would be allowed on public land,” the bench insisted.

The Apex Court had directed the states and union territories to file their compliance report after receiving the order to restrict construction of places of worship of all communities on government property.

The bench had said the district magistrates or district commissioners would submit a report to the chief secretaries of their respective states on the unauthorized construction of any place of worship and a compilation of the reports be submitted before the apex court for monitoring.
