Last Updated 19 April 2014, 20:28 IST

A minor fire broke out on the roof of the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro station on Saturday.
The authorities had to halt the Metro after the smoke triggered the fire alarm at the premises.

The station remained closed for a brief period. According to fire officials, a rubber mat near the gate number one and two caught fire, belching out thick smoke.

Three tenders were rushed to the site to bring the fire under control. A DMRC spokesperson said that the train services were resumed by 1:28 pm, about six minutes after the fire broke out.

According to eyewitnesses, security officials evacuated passengers from the platform after the area was filled with smoke.

“Chaos at Rajiv Chowk metro station... more difficulties for yellow line commuters. Escalators not working,” posted a passenger on Twitter.

Rajiv Chowk Metro station is a main interchange station on busy Dwarka and Nodia City Centre/Vaishali route (Blue Line) and Jahangirpuri and HUDA City Centre route (Yellow Line).

“The fire did not emanate from the Metro system,” said a DMRC spokesperson.
The spokesperson claimed that the smoke was due to burning of a construction material outside the Metro station.

This is the second incident of fire in the Delhi Metro in last eight days. Earlier, some passengers had noticed sparks and smoke emanating from a moving Metro train between from Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre route.
