In yet another public friendly initiative, the city police on Wednesday launched auto driving licence display system for the autorickshaws.

Commissioner of Police M A Saleem symbolically handed over the display cards having driver’s details to select operators, marking the launch of the programme.

The city has around 27,000 autorickshaws and the cards will be distributed at Lashkar, Krishnaraja and Narasimharaja police stations.

To obtain the card, the transport operators will have to submit their DL, residential proof, blood type and also three recent passport size photographs. June 15 is the deadline for the public transport operators to equip their three-wheelers with display cards behind the driver’s seat.

In case of any violation, they will have to cough up the fine.

Saleem said, the drive was mainly intended at addressing the public transport related complaints, including crime. There are instances, where either the drivers misbehave or the passengers lose their properties in the vehicles. It will eventually put the city, popularly known as tourist hub, in bad light.

The display cards would however come in handy containing information about the driver including his or her name, photograph, badge number, residential address, and cell number.

The emergency telephone numbers of the police too will be printed on the card for the convenience of the passengers. Such victim passengers can contact the given phone numbers to help sentinels swing into action.

In a meeting of regional transport authority held on December last, it was made mandatory for the three-wheelers to display the driver’s card, the Commissioner added.
