Last Updated 26 April 2014, 20:12 IST

Director and Principal of Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Mahesh Verma was conferred the title of Padma Shri for his contribution to dental sciences.

After receiving the title from President Pranab Mukherjee in a ceremony held on Saturday at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Verma said, “The central and state governments should give further priorities to oral health programmes and create more job opportunities for young professionals.”

He also said that the dental services should also be included as part of national rural and urban health missions.

Verma’s role has been instrumental in expending the specialised dental facility through his college.

His contemporaries laud him for bringing dental awareness by organising the Dental Health Mela every year. He also played a key role in turning his institute into a ‘centre of excellence’ treating thousands of underprivileged in a modern hospital, the MAMC authorities said in a press statement.

Verma is president of Indian Dental Association and is a recipient of Dr B C Roy Medical Award (highest) by the President of India in the year 2008.
