Bangalore University has clarified that the recent circular on its office hours was issued only with an intention to ensure the safety of students in general and not to impose restrictions or curbs on research students.
After a section of the students expressed their displeasure over the circular, Prof B Thimme Gowda, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University, said on Sunday that it was done in the interest of students.
The circular was issued in the wake of a research student at Kolar PG centre accusing her guide of sexually harassing her. According to the circular, the offices of the university would remain open only between 10 am and 5 pm.
‘No need for confusion’
However, Registrar K K Seethamma said there was unnecessary confusion about the circular.
“There are 50 departments in the university and it is important for us to consider the safety of female students and staff. There is no mention of any restriction on the timings in the circular,” she added.
She said that security will be provided to research students who stay on the campus after working hours, if they make a request to the vice-chancellor.
The registrar said that Dr K V Srinivasamurthy, the research guide accused of sexual harassment, had given his statement before the vice-chancellor.
“The complaint committee against sexual harassment will take up the investigation after hearing both the parties,” she added.
