BJP’s Tuesday meeting to set stage for formation of next government

President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday dissolved the 15th Lok Sabha and received from the Election Commission (EC) the list of members just elected to the new House.

Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, accompanied by  Election Commissioners H S Brahma and Nasim Zaidi, called on the President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday, submitted to him a copy of the notification containing the names of the 543 members who have been elected to the 16th Lok Sabha, according to a press release issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Election Commission  issued the notification on Sunday under Section 73 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951, to formally declare the results of the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

The notification set in motion the constitution of the 16th Lok Sabha. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured majority on its own, as it won 282 seats in the 543-member House. Its allies in the National Democratic Alliance won another 54 seats.
The Congress, the single largest party in the 15th Lok Sabha with 206 seats, performed poorly in the polls, managing to send just 44 MPs to the new House.

New Leader

The Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary party is set to elect Narendra Modi as its leader on Tuesday, setting the stage for he being sworn in as the new prime minister by the end of the week.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet headed by outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday had recommended dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.

Acting on the recommendation, the President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday dissolved it, exercising powers conferred upon him by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of the Article 85 of the Constitution, stated another press release from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
