An exhibition, ‘Two art (in)hibitions’, by Johanna Steindorf,  a resident at Blank Noise, and Claudia Reiche, a resident at Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology will be held in the City.

The two exhibitions follow artistic approaches that do not always believe in visual representation.

‘Parlor Talk’ — a work-in-progress performance by Johanna Steindorf, will be held on May 22 and 23, from 1 pm to 8 pm, at 1 Shanthi Road. The title is a reference to conversations that form the basis of the audio work as well as to the performance that Johanna enacts during the exhibition. As foreigners, immigrants, urban nomads and women, it’s about how one negotiates personal space and how it is influenced by the circumstances one lives in. The artist recreates and dislocates a situation in a place regarded as a typical feminine domain — the beauty parlour.

‘H*jra’, the work-in-progress presentation by Claudia Reiche, will also be held on May 22 and 23, from 1 pm to 9 pm at 1 Shanthi Road. ‘H*jra’ presents a multi-layered work on necessary failures of representation. The visual works include a 19th century photograph of a hijra.

Photos taken by members of the local transgender community on ‘what they’d wish away’ (or wish to stay) to capturing ritual acts during the traditional celebration of the marriage between Aravan and Mohini — the female form of Krishna — at the Koovagam ceremony, will also be on display. Entry is free. For details, call 25205305/6 or visit www.goethe.de/bangalore; facebook.com/goetheinstitut.bangalore.
