A man allegedly stabbed his 21-year-old wife to death with a kitchen knife because she had not served him breakfast on time.

The accused was arrested soon after the incident happened in north-east Delhi’s Seemapuri on Tuesday morning.

Gautam married Manju in 2012 and stayed in rented accommodation at Sunlight Colony in Seemapuri. Neighbours told police that the couple often fought, adding Gautam also frequently assaulted Manju.

At 8 am on Tuesday, he asked her to serve breakfast. But she was busy with her daily chores and took time to prepare it, which allegedly angered him. Manoj started scolding her and then he rushed to the kitchen to fetch a knife.

“He allegedly stabbed her on the neck and back, due to which Manju became unconscious and fell on her head,” a police officer said.

Gautam allegedly dragged her body to the terrace and tried to push it off to make it look like a suicide. But neighbours had heard the woman’s screams and had gathered outside the house.

Seeing the people below, Gautam allegedly left the body on the terrace and rushed to his room.

He stayed there while the neighbours rushed Manju to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

When police arrived, they found Gautam with blood still on his hands. He had been unable to escape with people standing guard outside the house, the officer said. The knife allegedly used in the murder was also seized.

A case of murder and destroying evidence has been registered against Gautam with Seemapuri police station.

The victim’s body has been preserved at a mortuary and police are waiting for her family to arrive.
