Sand prices head northwards

Last Updated 12 December 2009, 17:45 IST

“A truck load of fine sand which used to cost nearly Rs 12,000 before the strike, is now about Rs 21,000. Filter sand now costs between Rs 15,000 and Rs 19,000 as against the earlier price of about Rs 9,000 for a truck load,” said a member of the Bangalore District Contractors Association.

Non-availability of sand has brought construction activity in many parts of the City to a grinding halt. The construction workers are the hard hit as they are out of job. However, sources said that sand transportation has been on clandestinely, during late night hours on Mysore Road, Kanakapura Road, Tumkur Road and Peenya by truck owners who are defying the order of the FKSLOAA in order to make money.

Supported by the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association (FKSLOAA), the stir has been called after stoppage of temporary permits for sand transportation in the wake of a High Court order.  The permits are issued by the Department of Mines and Geology.
