Namrata Purohit, “the youngest trained Stott Pilates instructor in the world", sheds light on why the regime is such a rage today, the world over .

How's Stott Pilates different from the regular Pilates? It's quite similar. The most obvious difference is that regular Pilates maintains a straight spine during exercise, while Stott Pilates focuses on maintaining the natural curvature of the spine. Also, in Classic Pilates, there’s hardly any props used. But in Stott Pilates, several props may be used.

Why did you choose Pilates?

When I was 16, I had a terrible knee injury. I fell off a horse and had to have an immediate surgery. Post surgery I tried various fitness forms to get back the strength prior to my injury, but nothing seemed to help. This is when I tried Pilates. I not only felt stronger in just four sessions, but was also more confident and had better balance.

This is when I fell in love with the magic of Pilates and decided this magic has to be spread across our country. Being the youngest trained instructor has given me the opportunity to meet, interact with and train a wide variety of people from across multiple industries.

Why are so many celebrities opting for it?

Pilates can be done by anyone and everyone. At our studio, we have people from the age of 12-80 doing Pilates. It is a very safe form of exercise and can be customised to each person’s body type and goal. Pilates works your body inside out.

It not only strengthens and tones the superficial muscles of the body, but also the deep muscles of the body. It makes you feel and look good. It improves flexibility, balance, strength and overall fitness levels. It also helps with coordination and concentration.

You will be more flexible, have a better understanding of the body and learn how to use each muscle correctly.

What’s your fitness advice?

The first thing is it's never too late. All you need is 20-30 minutes a day to get a decent workout. Something is better than nothing. Find a regime you like and once you start you will never stop!
