After an Intelligence Bureau report pointed fingers at its activities, Greenpeace on Wednesday refuted the charges of stalling development, saying these are “conscious attempt to crush and stifle” opposing voices in the civil society.
The NGO said the allegation of foreign hand seems to be the favourite stick for governments to silence voices of opposition time and again.
“Greenpeace India is an independent organisation, which campaigns for development which is sustainable and growth that is inclusive. How can this be a threat to national economic security? We are clearly a threat to powerful corporate interests that seek to bulldoze clearances at the cost of millions of people and the environment,” Greenpeace senior campaigner Abhishek Pratap said.
His comments came against the backdrop of reports in a section of media that an IB report to the PMO has said that foreign-funded NGOs have “negatively impact economic development” and called Greenpeace “a threat to national economic security”.
The IB has cited activities ranging from protests against nuclear and coal plants and funding of “sympathetic” research.
