Inviting friends to watch a football World Cup match at his house proved costly for a man in south-east Delhi’s Greater Kailash. After the match, the 30-year-old found cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh missing from the house.

The victim has been identified as Jyotveer Singh Chadha, a resident of Hemkunt Colony. In his statement to police, Jyotveer alleged that one of his friends, 31-year-old Vikram, may be involved in the crime.

On Sunday, Jyotveer had invited 15 friends to watch a match in his house. When they were watching the match, Jyotveer went to the first floor of the house to get a phone charger. He was followed by Vikram.

When Jyotveer asked where Vikram was going, Vikram replied that he was going to the washroom.

Vikram, however, did not return to the room where the group was watching the match for around 30 minutes.

When asked where he was, Vikram claimed that he had gone to meet another friend who lives in the same colony.

After the match got over, Jyotveer went to the first floor and was shocked to find a room ransacked.

Lockers were open and empty jewellery boxes were lying on the bed. Jyotveer immediately made a call to the police control room.

He claims that Rs 3 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh were missing. Jyotveer alleged that Vikram burgled the house and took the cash and jewellery to his friend’s house.

A case of theft has been registered with Greater Kailash police station but no arrest has been made yet. As part of initial probe, police have collected fingerprints and CCTV footage.

“It seems as if an insider is involved. Jyotveer’s friends and domestic help have been questioned but no substantial evidence has been gathered to make an arrest,” said a police officer.
