Last Updated 17 June 2014, 19:23 IST

The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday dropped charges against the Karnataka State Pre-University Board in connection with initiating action against a college lecturer.

Despite having a permanent job as a lecturer, Sridhar Gajanan Bhat, a native of Areangadi in Uttara Kannada district, had obtained a contract to cater and supply food to commuters on board Konkan railways.

Following a PIL filed by Suresh T Naik, the High Court division bench headed by Chief Justice D H Waghela had directed the board to initiate action against Bhat under grant in aid rules, which forbids employees from engaging in private trade. Since no action was initiated, the petitioner had moved the court for contempt.

During the hearing, the board submitted that action has been taken as per the rules. A division bench comprising Justices K L Manjunath and Ravi Malimath dropped the contempt charges.
