Parties slam Centre

Last Updated 17 June 2014, 20:21 IST

The Congress and other political parties on Tuesday slammed the government’s move to remove governors appointed during the UPA tenure.

“Governors being constitutional authorities should not be subjected to a public debate. We ask the central government to ensure constitutional appropriateness. The May 2010 Supreme Court order should be followed in letter and spirit,” the chairman of Congress communication department Ajay Maken said.

The CPM said any change in governors should be made with the concurrence of the state governments and those holding these gubernatorial positions should not be treated as political appointees. Senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said: “The general view was that since these were constitutional positions, they should not be treated as political appointments, but this principle was never adhered to by whichever party came to power.”The SP described the BJP-led Central government’s move as “dangerous” for democracy.

“Centre was trying to saffronise the country by appointing RSS and BJP men as governors in states,”party national general secretary Naresh Agarwal said.
