“We want to make Bangalore as good as Singapore. We want our city to be safe for our children, women and old people,” he said. The campaign launch also saw the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, B V Kulkarni saying: “We are looking at a GIS Electoral Roll to be in place by December 2010.”

Speaking on the occasion, Swati Ramanathan, Co-Founder of Janaagraha, said, “Voting is the fundamental duty of the citizens in a democracy.”
She said that there is a need for greater participation of the local governments in the progress of the cities. On the process of the Jannagraha programme, Ramanathan added that the work is based on the REED, acronym. “The REED acronym stands for Regional, Empowerment to Local Government, Empowering the local body with various tools and Direct responsiblity,” she said.

Jaagte Raho is a initiative by Janaagraha, a Bangalore-based non-profit organisation working with citizens and the government to improve the quality of life in India’s cities. Last year, Janaagraha had partnered with Tata Tea for the Jaago Re movement to inspire the country’s youth to vote in the Lok Sabha elections. The organisation aims to achieve 60% voting participation and 90% voter registration. It has completed eight years in this field.
