JOIN USThe Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will invite tenders afresh for the 38 garbage contracts which were cancelled after the BVG India and some other contractors failed in the waste management.
BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana, at a meeting held on Friday with the zonal officers, directed officials to start the process within a week.
The decision was taken in order to expedite the Palike’s ambitious project of turning 22 wards into ‘no litter zones’, which will kick off shortly. The thrust will be on segregation of waste in these litter-free zones for which segregation points have been identified.
Wet waste collected at these points will be sent to the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) to convert it into compost manure, and the dry waste will be recycled. The commissioner warned officials and contractors of stringent action if they failed to ensure segregation at their respective areas.
Lakshminarayana sought participation of citizens, officials, contractors and public representatives, to make segregation of waste at source a success. He also directed the zonal commissioners to entrust an official in each ward with the onus of waste management. at least 10 black spots should be converted into 10 transit points with a focus on cleanliness, he said.
