Kashmir paralysed on PM's visit

Last Updated 04 July 2014, 20:39 IST

Restrictions imposed by the government and strike called by separatists disrupted normal life in Kashmir on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on a one-day visit.

Reports said all shops, business establishments; banks, educational institutions and government offices across Kashmir remained closed while roads wore a deserted look as no transport plied.

The strike call was given by both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKLF to protest against PM’s visit to J&K.

Thousands of security personnel were deployed in old Srinagar since morning. All the exit and entrance points were blocked and residents were not allowed to move out for whole day. Elsewhere in Srinagar, the authorities put in place severe restrictions to stop the movement of people. Despite not being under curfew, commercial hub Lal Chowk wore a deserted look and the forces were seen patrolling the streets. There was also heavy security deployment in the adjoining Maisuma.

The police assisted by the CRPF were seen carrying out thorough checking of private vehicles in almost all parts of Srinagar. At some places forces were reportedly asking people the purpose of their commute.
