A family that tried to double their wealth by appeasing Goddess Lakshmi on Varamahalakshmi festival on Thursday, has lost valuables worth Rs three lakh in Vijayanagar police limits.

The family of Ravi, a BEML worker had celebrated the festival in a grand manner by showing off 150 grams of valuables in their possession, besides decorating the ‘kalasha’ (a coconut worshipped as part of the ritual) with a wad of currency notes worth over Rs 10,000.

The couple was of the belief that the goddess would shower more wealth, if the door of the house was kept open to let her in, as part of the ritual, and kept the balcony door open before going to sleep.

When they woke up in the morning, they were in shock to find the valuables missing. However, the act of theft has been caught on CCTV camera installed in the house.

According to the footage, the miscreant in mask, mostly covered by a saree, was found making away with the valuables. The police suspect that it could be the handiwork of the persons who visited the house for the festival.
A case has been registered.
