Three daring cops arrest armed robber in Delhi

Last Updated 10 August 2014, 20:07 IST

In what seems to be a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie, three Delhi Police personnel, posted with the Police Control Room (PCR) wing, chased and arrested a robber even as his two accomplices fired at them in north-east Delhi’s Nand Nagri area late on Saturday night.

Citing their exemplary commitment towards work, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi announced that the trio would be rewarded. Fortunately, none of the policemen were injured in the incident.

A loaded pistol and five live cartridges were recovered from Sher Mohammad, the lone arrested robber, police said on Sunday.

The three mobile patrolling van (MPV) staff were patrolling a street near Gagan Cinema in Nand Nagri at about 11 pm on Saturday when they noticed a man running towards them. Saurav Sharma, a resident of Karawal Nagar, told them that three unidentified men tried to rob him of his motorcycle and mobile phone.

“The MPV staff swung into action as soon as the crime was brought to their notice. At the instance of Sharma, the policemen began chasing the robbers who were three in number,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (PCR) Rajeev Ranjan.

When the robbers found that they were being chased, two of them fired at the police party. While two managed to flee, their third associate was overpowered by the three PCR van staff, Ranjan added.

The three policemen were identified as Assistant Sub-inspector Satya Prakash, Head Constable Ram Niwas and Constable Vikas. The trio was deployed in a PCR van with code “Baker-35”.

“The Commissioner of Police, Delhi has announced ‘Asadharan Karya Puraskar’ to all three PCR personnel for their act of bravery executed with dexterity and sharp reflexes without caring for their own safety,” said Ranjan.

Sher Mohammad, a resident of Balram Nagar near Loni in Uttar Pradesh, was handed over to the Nand Nagri police where a case under different sections of Indian Penal Code and Arms Act was registered against him.

His interrogation has revealed the identity of his two aides who managed to escape from the crime spot.
