A drunk District Armed Reserve constable fired at his brother-in-law, killing him on the spot over a family dispute in Bellary on Thursday night. His pregnant wife was also critically injured in the attack.

The accused Prasad is the bodyguard of former Bellary MP J Shantha. The victims are Varalakshmi, 27, Prasad’s wife, and her brother Nagaraj, 35. Varalakshmi is being treated at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS). Her condition is said to be critical.

The incident occurred at the couple’s house on Kappagallu Road here. Prasad had married Varalakshmi, a resident of Devi Nagar in Bellary, three years ago. However, he constantly harassed and tortured her, said DySP T S Murugannavar.

On Thursday night, after a bitter fight, Prasad pushed his wife out of the house. Incidentally, Nagaraj had arrived to resolve the marital dispute. However, an angry and drunk Prasad fired four rounds from his pistol, which he always carried around. Of the four bullets, two hit Nagaraj and Varalakshmi. Prasad also injured his left hand in the incident.

Prasad, who fled the spot, surrendered before the Gandhinagar police in the afternoon. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

The family members of  Varalakshmi alleged that despite repeated complaints to the senior officers of District Armed Reserve about Prasad’s harassment, no action was taken against him.
