Thingalaya wins 110M

Poovamma qualifies for Asiad

Siddhanth Thingalaya equalled his national record in the 110M hurdles as the 18th Federation Cup athletics championships ended here on Tuesday with a clutch of close contests.

The Maharashtra hurdler, representing ONGC here, won the gold in 13.65 seconds, the same time he clocked when finishing second in the Belgian national championships in 2012.

M R Poovamma of ONGC claimed the women’s 400M gold in 52.42 seconds while three other athletes who finished behind her went under 54 seconds, in a good augury for the Indian relay team ahead of the Asian Games.

Kerala’s P Kunhumohammed won the men’s 400 in 46.40 seconds, one-hundredths of a second head of Tamil Nadu’s Arokia Rajiv.

Tamil Nadu’s Manikanda Arumuguam (21.21 seconds) and Bengal’s Asha Roy (23.89) clinched the top spots in the men’s and women’s 200 metres.

Fresh from his bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, Arpinder Singh overcame initial hiccups to win the triple jump in 16.70M. Renjith Maheswary (16.43M) had to settle for the second place.

Rajasthan’s Delhi CWG gold medalist Krishna Poonia (32) ascertained her position right from the first round in women’s discus throw to win it in 56.84M from world junior bronze medalist Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, (53.26M).
