A 52-year-old Right to Information activist was shot at by two motorcycle-borne assailants near his house in south Delhi’s Chhawla on Tuesday, police said.

Parmanand Sharma sustained two bullet injuries and is currently in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

According to his family, it was the first direct attack on the RTI activist and one in a string of similar attempts to intimidate him.

“We were informed soon after Parmanand was shot around 10 pm outside his home,” said a police officer.

A team had rushed to the spot and took him to the local hospital where he was admitted with bullet injuries in the hand and thigh.

An initial enquiry has revealed that Parmanand was involved in a property dispute and might have been attacked due to it.

“According to his family, some local builders have apparently been against Parmanand and his family and have been pressurising them to vacate their home for some time,” the officer added.

The family has also claimed that a similar attempt had been made to scare them a month ago when some men had fired indiscriminately outside their house.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered with Chhawla police station.

Police were pursuing several leads based on the initial investigation and interrogating local criminals about their possible involvement in the incident.
