Former legislator Sarvabhouma Bagali has demanded the resignation of Law Minister T B Jayachandra for allegedly issuing directions to deputy commissioners that no environment clearance was required for carrying out sand mining.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Friday, Bagali said the directions of the minister was in contravention to law and had been stayed by the National Green Tribunal on August 20.

Bagali said Jayachandra had issued the directions in a video conference with deputy commissioners with regard to the implementation of Karnataka Minor Minerals Concession (Amendment) Rules, 2013 and Karnataka Stone Crushing Unit Control (Amendment) Act, 2013 in January this year.

The tribunal had pointed out that the direction was contrary to law. Jayachandra should take moral responsibility and resign, Bagali demanded.

Bagali alleged that large scale illegal sand mining was taking place in his home constituency of Indi. However, no steps were taken to prevent the same despite repeated complaints.
