Bescom launches software to detect distribution loss

Last Updated 04 September 2014, 19:42 IST

In an attempt at optimum utilisation of power, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has launched a software to increase the accuracy in detecting distribution loss.

Preventing distribution loss has been a persistent challenge for Bescom. The newly developed software promises high accuracy in calculating loss and economising power supply. Since the problem is more challenging in rural feeders, Bescom plans to give special attention to monitoring them.

To begin with, the Distribution Line Simulation (DLS) will be implemented in 62 sub-divisions. Bescom personnel will be trained to identify the weak spots in the distribution network in order to plug power leaks.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of this software is that it will eliminate manual intervention in updating the status on a daily basis.

Moreover, the electricity supply company will also be able to identify the specific location of power loss. According to Bescom officials, the technical loss at present is at 13.72 per cent and the transmission loss 3.9 per cent.

Power theft

The problem of power theft has been among the serious concerns in reducing distribution losses and the software would help the company in mitigating this problem as well. The initiative is being taken up in co-ordination with a Bangalore-based company, MAD Tech Solutions.
