UP's govt's crorepati babus

According to a survey conducted by the authorities, 364 clerks working in various departments of UP government in the state capital alone have been found to be multi-millionaires.

“These clerks were found to be in possession of wealth and assets much beyond their known sources of income,” said an official who was part of the survey here on Thursday.

Although these “babus” are spread over various departments of the state government, a majority of them were employed with urban and housing department especially the UP Housing Development Council and the Lucknow Development Authority, the official said.
The officials were shocked to notice that many of the clerks in the two departments had employed assistants on their own, without official permission.

“These clerks are too busy to discharge their official duty so they employed others to do their work”, sources said, adding that many of the babus owned travel agencies and construction companies besides big commercial complexes.

The officials said that the government was planning to identify more such officials and take punitive action against them.
