Priyanka sets new meet record in discus throw

Vishwambhar Kolekar of Railways completed a fine double, clinching the men’s 400 and 800 metres gold medals on the second day of the Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletics Championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday. 

In the 400 metres final, Vishwambhar clocked 48.5 seconds to emerge victorious while in the 800 metres, the 23-year-old romped home in 1:58.00. 

The day also witnessed four records. Jason Reuben Salins of Dakshina Kannada broke the boys under-20 shot put record, with a 16.63 metres throw. The 19-year-old erased the previous record of 15.77 metres set by Sairaj in 2013. 

In the under-20 girls discus throw, Priyanka JS of Dakshina Kannada created a new meet record with a 41.93 metres throw, knocking off the previous record of 36.99 by Reena Rodriguez in 2001. 

In the under-14 long jump, Bhagwankrupa Mehta of Bangalore Sports Club placed his name in the record list, with an effort of 5.97, surpassing the previous mark of 5.91 set by S Lokesh last year. 

In the men’s 110M hurdles, Tumkur’s Sumanth MK bagged the title finishing in 14.4 seconds. Srikanth of Alva’s (15.0) and Mahendra Rao of Mysore (15.2) settled for the second and third position. 

In the women’s 100 metres hurdles, Meghana Shetty of Sports Authority of India claimed the top spot, clocking 13.9. 

In the senior long jump, Avin Kumar K from Alvas’s and Aishwarya GM of Bangalore Sports Club took the top honours. Avin struck gold with a 7.22 metres leap while Aishwarya emerged victorious with a best effort of 5.98.

In the senior 4x100 relay, Fusion Athletica ruled the roost, conquering the men’s and women’s events. In the men’s final, the team rewrote their meet record of 42.0, crossing the finish line in 41.51 seconds. The women’s team prevailed in a thrilling contest, timing 49.0 to edge out Alva’s ‘A’ team, with just 0.1 second separating the two.
