<p>Indian Medical Association (IMA), on Saturday, exhorted doctors to desist from extensive use of antibiotics for simple ailments.</p>.<p> <br /><br />IMA President Y C Yogananda Reddy said even for simple ailments such as common cold, head ache, anti-biotics are prescribed, which must be avoided. <br /><br />“When used often and inappropriately, the bacteria gradually becomes resistant towards antibiotic. Thus, medicines turn ineffective,” he explained. <br /><br />IMA, has also appealed to patients not to urge doctors to prescribe antibiotics for quick relief from ailments. <br /><br />The association has also asked chemists to refrain from selling over the counter anti-biotics. <br /><br />Indian Pediatric Academy has started ‘Avoid Antibiotic Abuse’ campaign to foster awareness. <br /><br />Also, Indian Medical Association joined hands to observe Antibiotics Awareness Week from September 28 to October 5 and September 28 has been declared Rational Antibiotic Day.<br /></p>
