Hrithik Roshan is elated with the opening day collection of his latest release 'Bang Bang', which edged past the record set by the actor's previous best opener 'Krrish 3'.

The Rs 140 crore film, produced by Fox Star Studios, opened to Rs 27.54 crore on day one, making its way to the top 5 openers of all time.

'Bang Bang' also recorded the second biggest opening of 2014 after Ajay Devgn's 'Singham Returns' and is also the third biggest non-franchise film opening after 'Chennai Express' and 'Ek Tha Tiger'.

"That is so cool. Opening higher than a franchise film like 'Krrish 3' and beating my own record is one way to realise my own growth and strength," Hrithik said in a statement.

"But after that it is not about me. I am just glad I have been able to entertain my audience. And the entire credit for this humongous success goes to the whole star-cast, the entire crew and especially to the director Siddharth Anand. I stand here in gratitude," the 40-year-old actor added.

'Bang Bang', which also stars Katrina Kaif, was pitted against Vishal Bhardwaj's latest offing 'Haider'.

The Shahid Kapoor-starrer, which opened to good reviews, collected Rs 6.14 crore on its opening day.

'Haider', made on a relatively smaller budget than 'Bang Bang', has performed well in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The Kashmir-based film also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and is being hailed as Bhardwaj's best work till date. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', the film completes Bhardwaj's trilogy on the Bard's three tragedies after 'Omkara' (Othello) and 'Maqbool' (Macbeth).
