Two arrested for extortion calls

Two alleged gangsters have been arrested for making extortion calls to a west Delhi-based real estate dealer a couple of months ago. They had allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh to spare the businessman’s life, following which he approached police.

One of the accused Sanjeev is alleged to be a member of the notorious Neeraj Bawana gang. He was also said to be involved in a shootout between the Bawana gang and their rival Neeraj Dabodia in Rani Bagh in the wee hours of August 24.

Sanjeev, 27, had been shot at in that incident and had managed to escape injured before police arrived. Two persons had been killed though.His accomplice Sandeep Gulia, 28, is a property dealer. Police said Gulia ran his business from the office of Rambir Shokeen, a legislator from Nangloi.

 “He came in contact with criminal elements and started extorting money from businessmen,” police said in a release on Sunday.The two had allegedly joined hands to make an extortion call to real estate dealer Hitesh Chaudhary, who had an office in Paschim Vihar. Chaudhary approached police, following which the caller was traced to Sanjeev in Haryana’s Panipat district.

Sanjeev was first arrested and on his disclosure, Sandeep too was nabbed. Sanjeev was further found to be involved in a double murder case in Panipat district. He had killed a stationary shopowner there for refusing to intervene in a matter involving Sanjeev’s sister.

A customer who had entered the shop at that time to make some purchases too had been gunned down.Police said Sanjeev was subsequently jailed. He was granted a two-day parole to attend his grandfather’s cremation two years later.

He chose not to return to jail on January 27, the stipulated date, and was declared a proclaimed offender in May. He was also carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head.
