Lawyer scuffles with traffic cop

Slaps policeman who tries to challan him for driving on wrong side

In yet another attack on officers of Delhi Police, a traffic police head constable was assaulted by a lawyer near Rohini court in outer Delhi on Tuesday.

The head constable was attacked when he stopped the lawyer’s car as he drove on the opposite side of a one-way road, police said.The policeman has been identified as Santosh, posted with Rohini circle of the traffic police.

On Tuesday, he was on duty when he saw a car approaching a one-way street towards gate number five of the court at 9 am.Santosh signalled the driver to stop, but he tried to get away.

The driver eventually stopped the car and had a heated argument with Santosh. The driver was identified as Virender Sangwan, 29, a lawyer.Virender argued that the road was regularly used by lawyers to reach the court.The head constable, however, insisted that Virender pay a challan.

Cop slapped
In a fit of rage, Virender allegedly slapped and punched Santosh. During the scuffle, the head constable’s uniform was also torn.“The confrontation between Santosh and Virender was pacified by locals, after which Virender went inside the court,” said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).

According to police, Virender is practising at Rohini court and was identified at the spot by several lawyers.
Reported to police
Santosh later reported the matter at the police post on the court premises, after which Virender was summoned for questioning.
A case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with Rohini North police station.
The lawyer was detained, and was released on Tuesday evening.
“We are examining the matter and action will be taken after investigation. Several eyewitnesses have been questioned,” Singh added.
