The farmers were protesting in Davangere demanding the government to restart the Bhadra Co-operative Sugar Factory located near Dhoddabhathi. They had also demanded the governement to stop the process of acquiring around 180 acres of land near Dhoddabhathi by the Davangere Urban Development Authority for residential layouts. They were arrested and then sent Dharwad and Bellary jails.

However on Monday, the farmers lodged in the two jails began an indefinite hunger strike. The strike in the Dharwad jail was led by farmers’ leader J K Kotrabasappa, while in Bellary jail the strike was led by Nittuvalli Kengappa. The farmers have resolved that they will not withdraw their hunger strike until the State government concedes to their demands.
