In a state notorious for an appalling sex ratio, there is a reason to cheer. It’s surprising, but the preference of a girl child for adoption surpasses the desire to adopt a baby boy in Haryana.

The number of girls given for adoption exceeds that of baby boys, with eligible couples increasingly showing their preference for daughters.

If the data of one of the most prominent adoption centre in Haryana’s Panchkula is anything to go by, out of total 111 children given for in-country and inter-country adoptions in the last four years, an encouraging 71 are girls, against 40 baby boys that got adopted.

That makes nearly 64 per cent of girls as the first choice for adoptions in Jatland.
The trend comes in complete contrast to Haryana’s infamy on various counts.

Haryana has long lived with the blemished of a skewed sex ratio of 871 as per 2011 census.

The preference for the girl child is very high when it comes to inter-country adoptions, although the adoptions of girls that have taken place within the country are no less encouraging.

Nearly 72 per cent of abandoned baby girls at the centre near here have found overseas parents.

According to policy, officials say the government prefers in-country adoptions over inter-country adoptions.

But that’s not always a choice that the authorities concerned can exert, given that there are many children who don’t find adopters within India which is why they are given to parents staying abroad.

The number of abandoned girls that come to the centre for adoption exceeds the number of boys, which is why the rate of adoption of girls perhaps is more than boys.

The officials counter this saying that the trend preferring the girl child over boys started to show up ever since 2011. That year, out of total 15 children given for adoptions, 12 were girls.

But here at the centre, the focus is not on the gender that gets adopted. It’s on child care and ensuring that the abandoned kids get good parents who deserve them.
