A 32-year-old auto driver was axed to death by two persons in a marketplace of west Delhi’s Inderpuri on Wednesday.

The victim’s family has suspected the involvement of a neighbour with whom the victim shared an enmity for the last five years.

Police said they are probing into the murder from the alleged enmity angle. However, none of the suspects has been held yet, said an officer.

The weapon of offence was recovered from the spot.

“The attackers escaped immediately after striking Harish once on his head. But there were many people near the crime spot at that time, so they had to leave behind the axe,” victim’s cousin Ramesh quoted an eyewitness saying.

Harish Kumar had gone to a dairy near his home at 10.40 pm on Wednesday to fetch milk.

“He was returning with milk when he was attacked. He collapsed on the spot. The dairy shop owner came home and informed us about the murder,” Ramesh told Deccan Herald.

The victim was transferred to a hospital by a police team, but doctors suspected that he had died soon after the assault.

A murder case has been registered with Inderpuri police station. The victim’s family said no confrontation had taken place between the two families in the recent past.

“Five years ago, Harish had gone to attend a wedding in the neighbourhood. He was involved in a scuffle with a neighbour.

The man who killed Harish is that neighbour’s younger brother Dinesh,” alleged Ramesh.
A case had been filed then and it was being legally pursued by both parties, he added.

The two families were at loggerheads ever since, often getting embroiled in quarrels over different reasons, said police.

But what exactly instigated the murderous assault is a matter of investigation and the victim’s family is also being questioned, said the officer.

A native of Rajasthan, Harish had relocated to Delhi several years ago. He lived in his own house with his wife and an infant son.
