Full of lust, but very few laughs

Last Updated 07 November 2014, 19:35 IST

The Shaukeens
Hindi (U/A) ¬¬
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Lisa Haydon, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra
Director: Abhishek Sharma

Three old lecherous men (Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra) land in Mauritius to live their fantasy. They hit the jackpot as they bump into a crackpot — Lisa Haydon, who nevertheless has what it takes to dislocate jaws.

So, our men do the doggie drill day and night, sniffing and woofing around Haydon, who is perennially in shortage of clothes and sense. By the way, she dresses up other people. She is a designer who makes stuff with frog eyes and pigeon feathers. “How unique,” the seniors coo.

The original Shaukeen (1982) was a breeze with some unadulterated fun. Here, the three men try hard to have some “videsi” fun, but all their antics look jaded in no time. There are a few laughs here and there, but not enough to lift the film. Akshay Kumar plays himself — poking fun at commercial heroes and their Rs 100-crore clubs. At least he seems to have had some fun.

Lisa Haydon offers some relief, playing a bimbo with brainless elan. She even tries to kill herself after her ex-boyfriend fetches more Facebook “likes”.  Silly? Exactly.
