Harassment plaint against BU officials

Last Updated 12 November 2014, 04:00 IST

Five professors from Bangalore University filed a complaint on Tuesday with the Karnataka State Women’s Commission alleging harassment by the vice chancellor and the head of the Department of Kannada, at their workplace.

Confirming the complaint, Women’s Commission chairperson Manjula Manasa told Deccan Herald that the complaint did not pertain to sexual harassment.

It was about some problems the professors faced, like being forced to stay back in the university even when they did not have work and about issues pertaining to attendance, etc, she said.

‘Details awaited’

Manasa said the commission was yet to receive details and documents concerning the matter.

“I have asked the complainants to bring the documents tomorrow,” she said.

University Vice Chancellor B Thimme Gowda said there had been a misunderstanding between the Kannada Department’s faculty and its head for the past one year.

“Both parties have come to me with complaints several times. I had intervened and asked them to sort out the matter. While the HoD was threatening to file an atrocities complaint against the professors, the latter threatened to go to the Women’s Commission,” he said.

Gowda said he had issued a notice to both parties asking them to sort out the issues as the functioning of the department was getting affected. He added that it was an ego clash  between the two parties. The university has now forwarded the complaint to the university’s Women’s Cell.
