Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav may travel to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi to launch a special event at the famous Assi Ghat on the bank of the Ganges, from where Modi had launched his Mission Cleanliness a few days back.

Though Akhilesh may not pick up spade and join the cleanliness drive, he is likely to take part in the ‘Subah-e-Banaras’ (Varanasi’s morning) event there. The event will be launched on Saturday on the occasion of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s birthday.
The party leaders here said Akhilesh has been invited to launch the event which will showcase the beauty of the Ganga ghats, especially in the mornings.

“The event will not only contain programmes to show the different shades of Banaras, it will also present the old culture of the ancient town,” said the organisers.

The programmes include recital of the vedas by the girls besides yoga and music. The organisers said the music programme will be organised at a ‘bajara’, a specially decorated boat on the river.

Assi Ghat has become the centre of attention after Modi launched his cleanliness mission from here during his recent visit to his Lok Sabha constituency. He had also exhorted the voluntary organisations and the common people to join the mission to clean the city and the Ganga ghats. Since then a large number of people have been visiting the ghats and joined the drive.

Modi had then also announced a list of people who he said will take his mission further in the state. The list included the names of several important people from different fields as well as Akhilesh Yadav, though he has remained non-committal.

The SP leaders said Akhilesh wanted to send across the message that he too wanted to see the Ganga ghats clean.
