Credit card racket busted, kingpin held

Last Updated 21 November 2014, 03:45 IST

The kingpin of a gang of cheats has been arrested for stealing credit card data and thereafter transferring funds in bank accounts opened with fake IDs, police said on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Salim, a resident of Delhi Gate in Chandni Mahal. Police said transactions of Rs 66 lakh have been made so far by transferring funds in four bank accounts.

On November 18, Uttam Nagar-resident Naresh Kumar went to Chandni Mahal police station and reported that Rs 1.19 lakh had been siphoned from his State Bank of India credit card.

Naresh stated that he had made a transaction of Rs 31,200 using the card at Sai Telecom in Chandni Mahal on November 5. “On November 11, Naresh received an SMS alert from SBI regarding debit of Rs 1.19 lakh. He tried to stop the transaction, but it had been cleared by the bank,” said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central).
An attempt to debit Rs 50,400 and Rs 4.44 lakh was also made, but the transactions were declined due to recent upgrading of his card.

During investigation, numerous verification of bank accounts was conducted which revealed that the gang used a fictitious company – Bhutan Tours and Travels in Turkman Gate – for the withdrawal of cheated amount. Over 30 tours and travel companies were verified, but no such company was found operative.

A probe then revealed that the cheated amount had been transferred to ICICI Bank’s Chandni Chowk branch and immediately withdrawn through ATM transaction on Asif Ali Road. The bank account was opened in the name of Danish Malik, a resident of Turkman Gate.

Technical surveillance revealed that Danish’s details had link with Salim, owner of Sai Telecom. “Salim was interrogated during which he confessed his involvement in the racket. He was arrested,” Kumar added.

Salim told police that he was incurring heavy loss in his business due to which he planned to cheat customers who gave credit cards. He created Bhutan Tours and Travels with the fake name of Danish Khan.
