The Delhi government has decided to launch by December 1 a 24x7 control room for the homeless.

Residents who see people suffering in the chill can inform the authorities so that the needy could be helped.

Also, from December 10 the government has decided that each person in the night shelter will be served a cup of tea and rusk in morning.

Some 40,000 blankets will be added to the stock to ensure the well-being of the homeless, Lieutenant  Governor Najeeb Jung was told during a review meeting.

Surprise checks
Jung told officials that surprise checks and inspections of night shelters will be conducted by his office and Secretary-level officers and “any laxity observed shall not be overlooked”.

The Lieutenant Governor was told that there are 85 permanent night shelters and 102 porta cabins and 18 tented accommodations.

The review meeting came a day after Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu asked Jung about the preparedness of the Delhi government to help the homeless during winter.
