KHDC hikes weavers' wages by 20 pc

The meeting, which was chaired by KHDCL Chairman M D Laxminarayana, was held at the corporation’s office here at Keshwapur on Saturday, also decided to prepare a blue print for the construction of ‘Nekarara Bhavan’ and the corporation’s head office building at Vidyanagar in Hubli at a cost of Rs one crore on a five acre land.

Laxminarayana told media persons that the corporation was spending Rs 15 crore annually for giving wages to weavers, and the hike would cost Rs 2.40 crore more.

He said of the 80 staff members at the KHDCL office in Bangalore, 30 were ready to come to Hubli. “Those who were reluctant to shift to Hubli would be given voluntary retirement or would be deputed to other corporations,” he added.

In Hubli, candidates with diploma in textiles would be appointed on temporary basis. The government had been urged to empower officials at the local level to attend the board meeting of the corporation, as the present directors on the board could not come from Bangalore to Hubli often, he said.

The next board meeting would consider the proposal to close down the Priyadarshini showroom in several places including Delhi, Harihar and Bangalore, he added.
