Lack of a toilet resulted in cancellation of a marriage in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, about 300 kilometres from here.

According to the reports, the wedding party, which had arrived from Chunar to Bhatewara village for the marriage on Wednesday evening, returned without performing the rituals after it found that there was no toilet at the bride’s house.

Reports said the trouble began when a few women members of the wedding party expressed their desire to relieve themselves and inquired about any toilet around.
They were told that there was no toilet at the bride’s house and they would have to use the open fields.

“We were told that the women members of their (bride) family went to the fields to answer the call of nature,” said a member of the wedding party.

The family members of the groom became very angry and told the bride’s parents that they did not want to go ahead with the wedding.

There also was heated arguments between the two sides during which the father of the bride was reportedly slapped also.

As the matter threatened to take a violent turn, police were called in. Police also tried to persuade the groom’s family members and asked them not to cancel the wedding but they remained adamant.

Police then asked them to return the gifts and other items given by the bride’s parents. The wedding party returned after returning them.

Earlier also, many marriages were broken for lack of toilets in UP. Five newly wed brides left their in-laws’ homes after they found that there was no toilet there.
In at least two cases, the brides returned to their hubby’s home only after the construction of the toilets.
